Introduction of Special Education Center of Wuhou District, Chengdu City
Special Education Center of Wuhou District, Chengdu City was founded in 1985 on basis of the tutorial class of the former Chengdu Xibei Road Primary School, and officially set up as Wuhou District Education Center for the Mentally Retarded in May 1991, which has filled the gap of special education of Chengdu City. In 1998, the Education Center for the Mentally Retarded was relocated to Huanhouxiang Primary School and renamed as “Special Education Center of Wuhou District, Chengdu City”. In 2003, the center was relocated to Jinyang Primary School. Currently there are 62 mentally retarded students （41 boys and 21 girls）, 5 classrooms and 17 existing staff members.
Special Education Center of Wuhou District, Chengdu City, through all the teachers’ unification and collaboration with each other, and under the leadership of the municipal and district Bureau of Education, is undergoing change of scale and degree of perfections. Now it has already become the sole and only specialized school for the mentally retarded students. During the education practice, the school sticks to the principle of “integrating education and research, labor exercise and recovery exercise, school and home and society”. The slogan is “everything for the children”. According to the characteristics of education for the mentally retarded, we stick to “holistic education” and the principle of constant development, put emphasize on subject study characterized by autonomy, motility, and creativity, paying high attention to individualized education and personal diversities, providing the most suitable conditions and assistance for the all-round development of the students, enabling the students to genuinely know how to perceive, how to act, how to get along, and how to survive, making recoveries in some degree in psychology and physiology so as to lay a foundation for being an independent laborer in the society afterwards.
As in the need of city construction, the school has been relocated for several times. But it has expanded all the time, through the teachers’ spirit of unification and struggle, and hardheaded passion. There are many obstacles for the retarded student with their acting abilities. Our teachers, with a caring attitude, train and exercise them with never-ending patience, concerning their life and paying great attention to their physiological and psychological health development. For the highly and severely mentally retarded students, under the teachers’ careful training, they have also made progress in different degrees.
To meet the need of the special children, the school actively organizes teachers to carry out research on teaching, and makes daring reform on the contents, method and form of education. We have put great emphasis on the selection of teaching materials, compiled textbooks by ourselves, and have carried out research in the form of comprehensive teachings. With diversified teaching methods, the students are allowed to obtain knowledge, learn how to study and develop their thoughts.
The school focuses on labor training for the mentally retarded students. We strengthen their self-reliance ability in life, enforce house working and public labor for the seniors. Under the tough conditions, we overcome obstacles, find social practice base, set up training place suitable for students, and try every effort for them to get optimum labor trainings, which has now become of the great characteristics of the school.
Our most outstanding characteristic is “teaching in combination of music& PE”. In the training on students, we allow them to learn in games and with beautiful melodies according to their physiological and psychological characteristics and the need to explore their potentialities. With poor physical conditions, the students need to enhance physical training. The school organizes teachers to make studies on students’ physical training. There are always performance and sports meetings of small or large scale in the school, which has promoted the students’ physical and mental development with good achievement. For every year’s arts performance and sports meetings, students’ participation rate is100%. Our music teaching has won the first prize for music and second prize for sports in Chengdu initial competition among special schools. For arts performance, we have won the first and second prize in the initial competition of Chengdu City. In 2001, on behalf of Sichuan, the school won one golden medal in the participation of the 5th national handicapped sports meeting in Shanghai; 6 golden medals, 3 silver medals, and 4 brass medals in the 5th Olympics for the handicapped in Xi’an in 2002; 1 silver medal and 2 brass medals in the Ping pong game of the special national Olympics in Shenyang in 2004; 1 golden medal, 1 silver medal and 6 brass medals in the national hockey tournament in Harbin in 2005.
The school has been well-acknowledged by the society; recommended by parents and appraised by the superior department. It has been awarded with the title of the Chengdu and Sichuan advanced unit for special education. Currently, there are more than 60% young teachers, who have inherited the glorious traditions from the predecessor teachers for special education, constantly improving their professional qualities, deepening the reform of education for the mentally retarded and dedicating their youth to the career of education for the mentally retarded ones.
